I was wondering If my sister and I were the only ones that had gone to

Lynnewood. I am sorry that I don't remember any of the teachers but I

do remember in the third grade the teachers finally put us in the same

room because we kept switching classes and they couldn't tell who

belonged in the classs. We thought it was funny.

I came to Cheltenham in 9th grade and went to Thomas Williams. Yes, it was so 50's--sock hops in the gym, for one thing. That's where we had the secret soloist, one of my most vivid memories--I had never even heard the O Holy Night! Nancy Kelly wore a baby blue long dress and was the greatly anticipated secret soloist!

Jerry, John Zacherle was one of my idols. I recall going to WCAU to meet him, maybe even before I went to TW and met Linda. I had his records, like Dinner with Drac and Monster Mash. According to Wikipedia, he's 97 years old!

Some of us went to Thomas Williams Jr. High because we were in the experimental math program.  I believe they called it Illinois math.  I also have vivid memories of the "Secret Soloist" at the end of the school's Christmas assembly, right before we began Christmas vacation.  As Sue stated, it was Nancy Kelly when we were 9th graders.  I believe Mr. Long was the music teacher who prepared her for the big event.  The only other things I remember from TW were playing punch ball at recess and getting cut from the baseball team after having gone out for the outfield.  Somehow Reggie Jackson made the team and I got cut!

My mother was always mad at Bessie and she would stop by the school (to my humiliation) to tell her what she thought wazs wrong with things. I had al lisp at the time (I have to go through speech therapy there).

She defined dowdy matron.

marilyn..of course i remember you and your sister...memories of lynnewood and our classmates are the most vivid of any of my school years and i have the class photo...i entered in the middle of third grade and was very behind coming from a sweet little noncompeditive school in nj....so i had a very difficult time...marlene barbash was the first person i met in miss batist's class...the only teacher i ever liked was mr. tremble the gym teaher and miss gayley...she told my mother i was creative and those words fed me for a very long time and i still cherish them...

Marilyn, Carolyn and Kathy,

I also attended Lynnewood and remember you both.  Marlene Barbash and I used to play games during recess about which we reminisced fondly at the 50th reunion.  I recall the day when hurricance Hazel descended during recess and we all ran around excitedly in the high winds yelling "Hazel's hit!!!!"

Marilyn - what a hoot you and Carolyn must have been switching classes.

Am enjoying all the posts folks.  Am keeping in touch with Ruth Weisel Guthrie, Virginia Webster Hilligoss and Lauren Oldak Howard.  Also Eileen Tyrala via Ruth.

Just had my first grandchild in September and thought I might be the oldest to do so but Nancy Eisenberg has knocked me off that throne.  Congratulations Nancy!

Bessie S. Husted had blue hair.  When the light shone through it she looked like a big blue lightbulb.  I can't say I have any bad memories of her with respect to me personally.  But some people called her (not to her face of course) "Bessie Moo Useless."  Looking back on it, I have to say that was kind of cruel.  But after all, we were all just kids.  What did we know about acceptance?

Happy birthday to all joining the 70 ranks !!! I reached just prior to Christmas. Now officially old in years, not in spirit. Ills and surgeries now too numerous to detail. ---- But those of us who can read/post are really blessed to still be on the up side of the grass, and the assumption is that we are enjoying our lives for the most part.I certainly am. ---- I must also say that the pictures posted show a group of people that have aged well outwardly. ---- Guess if I make 80 I'll consider myself elderly. Fortunately I have a good group of friends ranging from 80 - 94 who are great models for living well in that range.

I am so sorry Larry that I have to tell you this.  I am older than you by 6 weeks.  Unless someone in our class was born in Jan 1 or 2nd, then I am the first to start the year older bit.  LOL.  I turned 71 on Jan. 3rd.

Hope all is well....

Thanks for the birthday good wishes. Amy, I'm so sorry I had to cancel lunch. I actually think I had the flu as 10 days later I am just coming around . I will call to reschedule after I return from Florida mid February. To all who are retired and about to hit 70 don't think about the number! I find I am happier than I have ever been to do the things I love without the pressure of a job, and I have very little down time. While I don't post much I enjoy reading about everyone's thoughts and adventures, so keep it up!!!!

Sue --- It's great to have a circle of all ages. I play alot of tennis, a good bit against men of our age, some with guys in their upper 80's, quite a bit with women in their 50's too. Still it's quite fun to be against guys in their 20's thru 50's on occasion. With the right partner they sometimes get frustrated when they find that they aren't going to be able to just pound the ball thru us. Sometimes as their frustration mounts, they come totally apart. On balance, however, giving away 15 to 45 years is not generally a recipe for athletic success. ---- Socially, once they've been around the block a time or two and find out they don't know everthing, it becomes rewarding to have a conversation with someone from a generation or two younger. ---- Remember when we knew everything ----- NOT !!!!   ----- switching gears ---- Our lone grandchild is a great young man, mega smart and talented in many areas. Also positively anal about his schoolwork. I have no idea where those genes came from. I spent virtually every school morning at EPJH and CHS begging someone to allow me to copy their homework. Class was for checking out whichever young ladies I was attracted to. His dad was even worse as his school years passed in a drug induced haze. His mom was well rounded in school but not overly into the books. Go figure. ------ CHS was a blessing however, due to the high standards set by the staff and the high achieving students. Even a screw off like I was got exposed to everything needed to do well at the next level when some degree of maturity was attained. ----- switching gears again ---- Snowing hard here now. Did anyone not like it when school was called ?  My attitude toward snow has done a 180.

Glad to see others have aged too althought I'm discouraged because I thought people from Thomas Williams aged at 1/2 the rate of everyone else in CHS.  Oh well!  I play tennis several times a week with Dennis Cooper  and Rob Peterman ('62).  I see Neal Kulick when he comes to Phila. or we visit him in Chicage.  I also see John Leonard regularly and on ocassion Joe Hewlett, Tom Ramsey, Hank Mayer and Gwen Faust Punchard whom I've seen in Glenside and Avalon with her grandchildren.   George Trapp.....I was interested to see you live in Dillsburg.  I met my wife of 46 years at Gettysburg College where I'm still active.  So I know Dillsburg and Rt. 15.

Yes Bob ---- Gettysburg College is about 20-25 minutes from us. Used to get there often over the 40 years my wife coached Messiah College field hockey and when our oldest daughter played basketball and softball for Messiah. If you have free time and get to G-burg perhaps we can play some tennis (doubles). ----- Anyone out there know what became of Joan Trichon? Would have been a year ahead of us. Went to Cheltenham Elem and I think EPJH. Her dad died young somewhere in those years and perhaps her mom remarried. I can't remember her in HS but that doesn't mean she wasn't at CHS.

George and other Baseball fans.  Recently saw "EVERYBODY WANTS SOME".  You'll want to see it and remember college hijinks of your team.  I found the first act derivitive of so many teenage, "Let's party, drink beer and get laid!" movies.  But then with the exposition over, characters and relationships develope.  Finally we have some time on the playing field and the rest is really fine.  Touching enough so your wives will probably enjoy it too.

Saw an Irish film by the maker of "ONCE".  A sweet coming-of-age film c.1980, "SING STREET" about a 15 year old in a new Catholic School who starts a band.  He also falls in love with an older woman, she's 17.  The music is great.  Charming and winning, you can share it with your teenage grandchildren.  See it fast in a theater it's marketed as a foreign film, but then so was ONCE.  My only complaint:  One of the Irish kids needed subtitles.

Saw preview/ trailer for ELVIS NIXON or is it NIXON/ELVIS?  I have never laughed so much at a preview in my life.  Great dry wit.  They have both been characatures in my life/memory.  In 1977 I was driving on the Hollywood Freeway when the radio announced Elvis had died.  My first thought,"Good career move."
