I remember the 5th grade teacher's name being Mrs. Phefferly and 4th was Mrs. Brusser. My memory isn't the greatest these days though.

Hi All,

I have been reading some posts and attended a few Philly luncheons but haven't been actively participating online. My birthday is May 30, 1945. May 30th ws traditionally Memorial Day but now the Feds has relegated Memorial Day to the last Monday of the month. I guess I will will have to be satisfied with being a war baby. The chill is arriving in the Northeast. I feel fortunate to be looking forward to seeing my 5 out of six grandchildren (one is in CA) dressed up for Halloween.I hope to attend the next Philly gathering. Does anyone have any interesting old halloween trick or treat memories?

Ruth

I am writing this before I go to sleep, or should I pass out as I am babysitting my 6 year old twin grandchildren and their 8 year old sister.  I am in NJ and now that I have been a Floridian for 22 years not use to the weather either.  So after taking them to three birthday parties in two days, I don't want to see any more pizza or chicken fingers for a while.

70 is the new 55. I turned 70 in May, so that makes a war baby.  It kept my father in his position in the Navy protecting us from his base at the NY Neal yard.😁

Being 70 and feeling good is a blessing. I am still jogging two miles a few times a week and working out. Very involved in non profit work, especially with children and the elderly

Like all of this communication

When your grandchildren start high school, the age thing really hits home, particularly because we're reminiscing about our friendships and high school years from 50+ years ago.  My grandson is now a high school freshman!  How did that happen so fast??  He's so smart and loves learning and all his various activities, which reminds me of all of you.  Most importantly, he's a loving, good young man!  Warm regards!   Larry

Feb 21,1946.  Boomer!  Nate, a lot of us went to Penntpavker.  Amy, Arthur Cohen, Bob Meshel, Robert Greenstein, Lynne Lowe, George Bell, are the first to come to mind.  I am sure there were more.  Like Amy, Arthur, both Bobs and I  had the same zIQ test and skipped 1/2 year of Kindergarten. Hence our "young" age.. I never knew you were in Fla for a few years.  Maybe see you in Fla this winter with Sheryl Frost.

My birthday is May 7..the unofficial surrender of Germany in WW2  The dr. told my mom that with the prospect of the surrender she should get to the hospital early and wait for my arrival.  As for Pennypacker, I too, went there through 2A..I think I had a Mrs. Horn.  Then I went to Wyncote and met Miss Robertson...Mrs. Jager  who had a split 2nd/3rd grade class.  Miss Rainius and Miss Milligan for 5th grade..moving then to Myers where I had Miss Bunn and Miss Shaw.

February 10,1945. Since I was probably the oldest in our class (Feb 1st was the cutoff to start school), I was frequently asked if I had been left back! Pretty traumatic for a little kid!!, but I did drive first!! I love reading these posts, keep them coming!

Yes, Laura and Jerry, I definitely had Ms. Pfefferly in 5th grade at Wyncote Elementary and I remember having a crush on her.  I also remember bitchy Ms. Robertson in 6th grade.  To this day, I remember her calling me aside one day and asking me, "Do you know what a penis is?", because she had noticed my hands in my crotch area on more than one occasion.  58 years later I still have a vivid memory of this!  Bonnie, I had no idea so many of us attended Pennypacker.  Hope to see you in Florida this winter.

The switch from Miss Pfefferle to Miss Roberston was like from heaven to hell!  My sixth grade memories are still the strongest of my pre-high school years.  So many survivtal stories from that class!  Nate, I am also in FL, on the West coast, Naples.  Jerry, Carole, Sunny, Lewis, Lynn, Cheryl will all remember the great mini-reunion we had at Terri Saltzman-Cannon's home last year.  Let me know if your travel plans ever bring you near here, we can have another one.

Laura, I lost your phone #. Need to get together for lunch. Was just at Bonjour's with a friend of mine last week. Noticed a breakfast/lunch place next door to the Asian grocery called Patrick's. They have everything including Paleo stuff. It's on Pineridge RD.

If you want to see a wonderful movie, I suggest The Intern. Had no idea it would be as good as it was.

I went to Pennypacker also. I have a photo with George Bell, Sheryl Surkin from kindergarten!

Hi all! I'm finally going to get my voice heard on this forum. I'm June 24, 1945, so I guess I'm on the wrong side of 70. However, I'm feeling good and keeping active. Doing a lot of cycling - to the tune of about 1500 miles this year. I think it keeps me young!! It's really good to hear of so many of my classmates that are also keeping active. '63 is the best!! I look forward to seeing you all at the next reunion.

Jay Ginsburg.  My date of birth is Jan. 31, 1946; another baby boomer.   I agree with Larry Liss that  seeing our grandchildren come of age has quite an impact. I have a grandson starting med school next Autumn and a granddaughter starting law school then, as well.  It is just amazing.

@ Nancy C....  I am sorry to say that "I beat YOU at being the oldest."  Yes, Feb. 1st was the cutoff.   I had to repeat second grade, because everyone felt that I it was better to do so, since I was the youngest in the class then.  Ended up being unnecessary, but then who knew.

Anyway.... I would not have been part of a great class, The Class of '63, if I had stayed with the class of '62.  Still maintain a few ties with members of that class.

While cold up north... it is beautiful here in Bradenton/Sarasota.  The snowbirders have arrived and so have the winter birds!

Who's coming to the West Coast of Florida?  Where and when?  Need to start thinking about the winter get togethers.

I was set to join my brother at Pennypacker when we moved to Elkins Park; he was pushed up a half year and I was held back a half year to start in the Fall. He was allowed to stay at Shoemaker each time they redistricted the township; I wqent from Shoemaker to Rowland to Cheltenham Elementary in three straight years. Of course, I did get to meet a lot of people I wouldn't have at one school.

As to birthdays, Feb. 27, 1945. My dad was in basic training when my mom was hospitalized, and he was called back as the family's support. Like others in his situation, he had to work a defense job in lieu of service and then another job to pay the rent. Between the war and hangovers from the Depression, times were tough for lots of people. Not lots to celebrate. So, when my mom told me I was the result of a D-Day celebration, I took her at her word.

I just turned 70 on October 9,doesn't seem possible.  I seem to think my mother is 70 not me.  I'm still very active work every day at our family business.  But my husband and I do make many trips to Jupiter FL. where we have a condo.  I also have 2 grandchildren ages 6 & 7 and spend a lot of time going to soccer games, they both play.  Great to read all the posts.

I'm a "Chtistmas Carol" born December 22, 1945, during a blizzard.  I am known to breakout in song at any time, as the word Carol means song of Joy!

Have a Great Day!

I  turned 70 on May 27th. We moved to Wyncote from East Falls when I was in the third grade. I too was in Miss Robertson's class in the sixth grade. That year was a nightmare for me and it's validating to read that I wasn't the only one who was tortured by her. I wasn't afraid of her. I was more focused on trying to show her up, much to my mother's horror. My mother was convinced I had to being doing something wrong to precipitate Miss Robertson's categorization of me as obstinate and intractable, which I was proud to be under the circumstances. Trying to remember who was in that class: Laura Lerich, Fran Ostrum, George Bell, Bob Greenstein, Bob Berkowitz, Steve Cohen... For some reason I keep thinking there were sixteen of us.

Since I was born on February 4, 1946, my parents sent me to McKinley School in Abington Township for kindergarden and first grade because that date did not make the deadline for Shoemaker.  THEY WANTED ME OUT OF THE HOUSE, busy little bee that I was!!!  I remember crossling Township Line Road at Cadwalader every day to get there, before they had a stop light.  My kindergarden teacher was Miss Broombark.   How do you forget a name like that?  My first grade teacher was Miss Russell.  When I came to Shoemaker for second grade, the teacher (Miss Eckert who walked to school every day from Perkiomenville, at least that was the lore) interviewed all the new students.  She first asked me where I was born.  I had no idea, so I said New York because my mother was from New York.  Then she asked whether there was anything unusual about my birth.  I panicked and started to cry because I had no idea what she was talking about.  So she said, for example, were you born in a trailer?  Yes, I said, I was born in a trailer.  When my mother came to pick me up after school she was rather surprised to see my story on the posterboard where new students were listed:  "Janet Hoffman, born in New York in a trailer."  It became an apocryphal story in the family.  After all, I was born in Philadelphia, at Albert Einstein Medical Center.  Go figure.

For my birthday--April 23, 1945--so yes I am a war baby, I had a big party with a 40's theme. Everyone got in the spirit and wore appropriate costumes. Many were in uniform, some even had their original uniform from the forties. Served cocktails appropriate to the time and had a contest for the best hors d'ouvres typical of the forties--scallops wrapped in bacon won. The best costume was won by a young lady (one of our friends' daughter) who came as a newpaper reporter and the guy costume was won by a football player who even had the leather helmet of the times. Big band music was the order of the day. My neice put my hair in victory rolls and here is a photo of me in that wonderful hairdo along with my grandson. What a wonderful day it was.

As I said, my birthday is December 21. Winter is my favorite season, and I have this notion that we tend to favor the season in which we are born. I wonder whether that's true for others.
