Well I, for one, now plan to stop postponing my career as a golfer, attempt to drink more beer and wine, and dine on pigs' feet and calves' brains. I understand the former is delicious if prepared well; and calves' brains used to be on the menu in any decent French restaurant. But, as Elaine noted, that was in the B.C. era--before cholesterol!

Happy, healthy holidays to all!

Ginger, if it's any consolation, I also read the obituaries .... and then have a big dish of ice cream before I leave for my sky diving lesson ;-)

Thanks again for your wonderful postings.

Before I do another posting, can anyone of our forum experts tell me how to save or retrieve a disappearing post?  I have lost 2 before hitting submit.  I have learned from past experiences, that, I would lose my posts when I would momentarily leave the page to check something. Stop doing that. Now I don't know why it disappears.

Elaine.... You are so funny!!  Will be in touch.  Been a trying period of time, especially, without David.  Flooded with memories of holidays past.

Carol Silvers Pleeter ... Ditto.  Will be back to FL end of Jan.  What dates have in mind for reunion?

Sunny ... Any dates for Western get together.

Janet .... Only you would understand this!  After a month no CAR!  Apparently, transport broke down in Houston!  Will call.

to everyone else :

HAPPY  HOLIDAY  SEASON.

Warms wishes for a wonderful 2015, when many of us will be entering a new decade!!

Be safe, happy, warm/cool, and healthy.

Wow!!  What Great ladies and wonderful pics.  My birthday is next week . . . and now I feel middle-aged again.  My mother died at 75 because she smoked Old Gold cigarettes her whole life. I don't smoke or drink, but I still have fun.

I try to do something special for my new decade birthdays, so next year I'm going on a zip line in Las Vegas. At 60 I took a hot air balloon ride.  I'm always open to suggestions??

As a certified Hospice Volunteer, I consider any day I am walkin' and talkin' as a good day . . . The Present!

Happy Holidays and a Very Happy New Year to Everyone!

A Christmas Carol smiley

Happy Chanukkah and Merry Xmas to all.

This is the first year my husband and I are actually celebrating Hanukkah.  It's rather nice. I think he is enjoying it.

All those with any living parent are very lucky indeed. Sadly, mine died too young. My husband's mother lived to 100.  But not real quality living.

So we must live our lives doing what we like too do(legally of course:) enjoy your families, your friends and smile. Sometimes we forget how lucky we are and how blessed.

Elaine, wish I had the guts to do a sky dive. Used to say when I turned 85, I would do it. But now that age is a lot closer than it was 20 years ago, I am reconsidering. So I added golf to my life.  And I enjoy it, even if I am not so good.  I am out doors with friends and most of the time it is warm.  And not so life threatening????

Lucy, haven't heard from Terri. I think she is back down here. Just haven't heard from her yet.  I know she mentioned having the Florida reunion on this coast this year at her beach club. I think that would be grand.   Lucy, I hope your sadness lessens and only wonderful memories keep you smiling.

Stay young, healthy and happy everyone.

Sunny, I feel compelled to set the record straight.  In case there was any doubt, I meant, "Yes" to the ice cream but only joking about the sky diving.  Ha! Happy, healthy new year to everyone.

Been awhile since I caught up with the posts. ----- That "B" was indeed Doug Webb of CHS '63. He was a very close friend   from the time I arrived in the Twp in 1953 thru college and beyond. B was for Barford which was a family name and his dad's first name. It was Doug that interested me in recreational reading. We hung out together, shared rides, double dated, etc. ---- Unfortunately we also took walks together before we could drive for the purpose of smoking. Also I remember him using smokeless tobacco. ---- Our communication over the past two years was by email because it was hard for him to talk. Mouth cancer and its treatment had ravaged his mouth, throat and caused the need for reconstructive surgery of his lower jaw. ---- He was cancer free when we first reconnected but it  recurred shortly. He emailed in detail about this affliction and treatment. UGLY !!!! so I won't share it. As he fought it he was wiped out so email became infrequent and then stopped. ----- I appreciated that Ginger reported this as I have never had any contact with Doug's 2nd wife or the daughter he was so proud of. She graduated college within the past couple of years making her 14 or so years younger than many of our children. --- I'll find that obit.

I believe Carol observed that any day walkin' and talkin' is a good one. ---- Far better to be walkin' on the grass rather than pushin' up from the root side. Many of us have survived some major health issues, me included. It's great to be able to wish you all blessed Holy Days and/or Christmas again in 2014 !!!

George and others in math class with Doug may remember there was a day in high school when John Boyd suddenly decided that Doug Webb needed to be nicknamed "Fairbanks," pronounced much like W.C. Fields would have done it. The nickname stuck for a good while, and Doug seemed quietly amused and patient about all the fuss.Havcen't thought about that in years.

And, along with everyone else, I wish you all a joyous hliday season.

Elaine- I am actually sorry that you were kidding.  Maybe you will be the one to do it when you turn 85:)

Great story George. I am sure Doug would have loved to read it. I did not have the opportunity to know him. Wish I had.

Dan - I hadn't thought about that either. John did a pretty good WC imitation, so good that for a time his friends referred to him in a drawn out manner as " Dub-a-u  C-e-e-e ". --- Had brief contact with John last year but he didn't seem real interested.---- He was a heck of a hitter and a good catcher. Next to Reggie, he and Gus Freedman were the teeth in the '63 attack. Starting when I first knew him in 3rd grade, he was either the captain or the most sought after player for recess and lunch softball at Chelt elem. Everyone wanted to be on his team. --- In HS he mostly hung out with his older brother Tom  class of '62 and two of the Kling brothers, Richie and Joe who were Toms age but may have been in parochial school. Can't recall for sure. ---- John was in Vietnam and he was changed when he returned. How many times have we heard that about guys who went to war !! ----- I will probably shoot him an email about Doug in the next week or so.

I think it was you who first mentioned the amount of useless info we all have stored up from back then and I seconded that at the time. So this time the death of a friend kicked more of it to the surface. When you figure that most of the '63 guys have lived 6 1/2 to 7 of every eight years we will live, we'll be exploring memories more often than we'd like I'm thinking. The girls will generally not be as quick into this exercise.

I WAS IN MRS. GRAFF'S CLASS WITH JOHN BOYD IN 5TH GRADE.  HE WAS THE SUREST BET TO BE ON THE WINNING TEAM.

MRS. DONALD WOULD PUSH AROUND THE ART MATERIALS IN A CART UNTIL THE DEDICATED ART CLASSROOM WAS OPENED AND WE MOVED TO THE NEW WING.

I REMEMBER A COLORED CONSTRUCTION PAPER PROJECT, WE WERE ALL DOING "DISASTERS".  I WAS AMAZED AT THE ARTISTRY JOHN DEMONSTRATED.  HE DID A SINKING SHIP WITH SHARP AND CRISP FORMS FINELY CUT SCISSOR STRIPS ON THE EDGE OF THE BLACK BOW ENGULFED BY SPARKLING BLUE OCEAN AND WHITE ICEBERGS.  I ALWAYS FELT I WAS TALENTED BUT JOHNS WORK WAS AMAZING..

Happy Holidays everyone! Whatever you're celebrating do it well!

So sorry to hear about Doug, he was a very sweet guy, always with a nice smile.

On the happier side Dan and Jon - wow are you guys lucky to have such long-lasting mothers. Mine has been gone since 1990 - she was not much older than we are now. Scary thought. I'm hoping my genes are like my uncle's who is 93 and still smarter than anyone I know. Does the NYTimes crossword everyday in about 20 minutes - still consults for work. He's a kind of walking Wikipedia - mention anything and he can tell you something about it. My hero.

I hope we can keep up our Friday lunches in 2015. The next is scheduled for January 16th - same place, The Field House, on Filbert St, just across from Reading Terminal Market. Get a table close to Filbert St - it's warmer and away from the sports show!

Anyone coming to Philadelphia, please let me know - would love to see you!

Merry Christmas, everyone!  Like other classmates, I am sad to hear about Doug.  Yet, with all of his suffering, I am sure he, like my husband, David, is free of pain and at peace.  My condolences to Doug's family and friends.

While on the subject of longevity of family members,  I have to bring up my parents, as we are in the spirit of the holiday season. The period from Thanksgiving to post-New Year's is a favorite time in our entire family, especially while growing up in Cheltenham.  We celebrated Channukah and Christmas.   So, by writing in my journal of holidays past, I wish to share with you, some of my thoughts of holidays of those days.

It always started at Thanksgiving time.  My father was the PR Director for Gimbels.  One of his favorite jobs was organizing and running the Gimbels Parade (and did this for over  20 years).  Many years later, after his 90th birthday, he was honored at the parade as one of the oldest surviving members of the 20-30's Thanksgiving Parade crew in 1997.  Sadly, he died a year later of an infection.  Until then, like my mother, he was "all there"!  My mother would still have been alive at 91 and lived until much longer, if it hasn't been a botched minor procedure at Graduate Hospital in 2005.  What happened to Joan Rivers, brought back to me my mother.  No one should ever have to live through that.  Both of my parents lived in their Rittenhouse Square apartment until they died.  I have older relatives still living over 100 !! One aunt still goes to the Las Vegas casinos 3 times a week and plays the slots all day! Plays cards everynight.

Getting back to the holiday season.  My father and mother introduced to us the spirit of Christmas, as an American family holiday.  At the same time, my parents kept the importance of Channukah, as our faith's religious and joyous holiday.  My father always brought home the leftovers from all the Gimbels' holidays decorations and food.  They would say: What to do, what to do?  Dad and Mom decided to celebrate with a decorated tree and gifts.  Then they started a family tradition before I was born. by having a Gilberts' open house party on Christmas Eve, (and later, added, New Year's Eve).  It continued into the next day with a grand gathering for dinner and exchanges of gifts.  What a grand affair it was for over the 25 years I lived in Cheltenham, and later in Society Hill. Once they moved to Rittenhouse Square, David and I took over and continued the tradition back in Cheltenham and later in Bucks County.  Now it has gone to the next generation.

We celebrated with family & friends, always relishing the memories of being together.  This year, will be a tough one, as we added David to the list of memories to recall.  He was in charge of the tree, house decorations, and the Turkey with stuffing.  Oh, mustn't forget his bartending role!!  My father taught him how to make the best eggnog.  Sadly, he won't be doing that anymore. And, I now must hunt for the recipe in one of our family cookbooks.  Not for this year, but for future winter holiday celebrations.

I know, I know.... enough!!  Wish I was as clever and short like Elaine, but I do not have that talent!

However, I do want to wish all my classmates and families, again ....

A HAPPY and HEALTHY HOLIDAY.  Best wishes for a wonderful 2015.

Today is our son's birthday. Nick was born on Christmas morning 1976; the trip to NYU hospital was one of the wildest rides of my life since the only other folks on the road at 5:00 am were drunk and driving sideways at high speed. My wife's doctor had gone on vacation two days before, and his partner didn't want to leave a Xmas party to come across the street to the hospital. At one point the resident on duty asked if I could help "since you're a doctor." "Wrong kind of doctor," I responded. The doctor barely made it in time and likely spent about two minutes with us. Not a high school memory, but it certainly has stuck with me.

Nick was two weeks early. We like to say it was the last time he was early to anything. We have learned to adjust.

My dear Lucy, do not fret, I have a recipe for eggnog, the real deal, that was given to me by my italian friend over 45 years ago.  It starts with one dozen eggs, milk, whipping cream and sugar...now you can start to fret for this heart attack in a punch bowl!  Thank goodness the holiday only comes once a year considering the unhealthy foods confronting us all!

Btw, my uncle was second in command at Gimbels, which came in handy when I needed a summer job.  Small world.

Here's to a happy HEALTHY new year for all.

@ Elaine ....   Thanks for the receipe.  May try it myself, next week for New Year's Eve.   What was your uncle's  name?  I am curious, if it rings a bell.

I, too, worked at Gimbels.  Got stuck with modeling clothes for various fashion shows,, starting at the age of 5.  This was a job I did not like ( and did not receive a penny.  Child labor ?!? ).  Also, worked at the downtown store during the summer, until my junior year, whereby I worked in Gimbels Chelteham in the "college shop".  Don't remember if that was the official name.  How could I offer advice when I hadn't been to college yet. Would refer customers to the "experts".   Did this 2 summers and the only thing I enjoyed was getting my own paycheck!  LOL!

Great story Lucy. Weird: We both lived in Cheltenham, went to Myers, went to Endicott, now we are in FL. not far from each other. You lived in Society Hill as did my Mom. We lived in Rittenhouse Sq after my parents moved from Melrose Park.

Amazing how our lives intertwined. Except your parents lived a way lot longer than mine.

Here's to a wonderful New Year to everyone. May it find you in good health, with happiness not far behind.

Hi All!  My darling daughter Emily Fox, has written a big time TV show for VH1!!!! Its first showing is this Wednesday nite at 10 PM. I hope you'll flip on your TV and watch with me, wherever you are!!!! Its called HINDSIGHT. I saw the pilot and LOVED it...I think you will too.

Vicki, congratuations to your daughter for an auspicious debut!  I'm usually not interested in shows about the lives of Manhattan Milennials, but "Hindsight" was fun, and I've already got the DVD programmed for the next episode.  The challenge, I'm sure, is to maintain the novelty and freshness of the first episide but the principal characters are sympathetic and it doesn't hurt that Becca is very easy on the eye!

Any dates for an East/West Coast Florida lunch gathering end of January/February?  Need to "book" doggie care.  And, of course, my calendar.

Hope all is well.  Congrats to Vicki and her daughter.  I know how it feels!  I can see the shine and smile on Vicki's face.  Send title.  Would love to see it.  VH 1 on demand.

Dear Jon and Lucy

Thanks so much for watching Emily's show....and I'm glad you thought it was worthwhile. I hope the next (9) epsiodes will be at leat as good...she seems to think they have good potential. It sort of cracked me up as I listened/watched the program to pick up clues from her past life!

Lucy, I haven't heard anything going on as yet. I think a lot of the snow birds are just getting back down and probably haven't had the time to think about it.

Hopefully something will get organized.
