Here's a question for all of you. At a mini-reunion this weekend with five other classmates, we could recall our elementary and junior high school songs, but not one of us could remember anything of Cheltenham's alma mater. Was it that forgettable? Does anybody remember if we had an alma mater and what it was?

David Fertik

I think it was:

Hail dear old Cheltenham noble and strong,

Now let us raise our hearts to thee in song,

Long may thou noble walls echo memories dear,

Hail alma mater...eat me I'm a hoagie?

(I forget the rest.  Yes it was not memorable).

I used to love Marple-Newton's "Fight on" song.

Then I got to Penn and heard the original, "Fight on Pennsylvania

get that ball across the line..."

Funny, David.

Best regards,

David, you're amazing.  I like school songs, in general, but I have no memory of Cheltenham's, which is certainly an indication of how memorable it was/is. Shoemaker-ites, was Shoemaker's school song something with "Shoemaker forever" in the lyrics?  I hope that Arnold continues to progress.  Best, Harriet

Thanks for the acknowledgements.  I should have mentioned that the Hail! Pennsylvania alma mater song was so similar to the CHS lyrics I may be stating the Penn lyrics. (When I first heard the Hail! Pennsylvania in 1963 I was sure CHS has copied Penn's song, melody and words.)

THanks for the words to the Alma Mater but

Thanks for the words to the Alma Mater but I don't remember the tune.  I do remember the fight song...."on for Cheltenham, on for Cheltenham; push on to the goal".  It was to the tune of On Wisconsin and we must have played it hundreds of times during my four years in the band.  The tune still runs thought my head on occasion.

I think line 4 of the alma mater is:

"Fond recollections fill our hearts with cheer"

Hello....

Enjoyed reading about those who can remember alma mater songs!  David... You amaze me with your memory.      I remembered only the first two lines... Then brain freeze!!

Have a happy and safe Fourth of July.

Here's one: Can anyone recall the words to the Elkins Park Junior High alma mater?

The six of us remembered the Shoemaker school song (Shoemaker forever, we all love our school), the Cheltenham Elementary song (Cheltenham elementary, the school we love the best) and Elkins Park JH (We raise our hearts and voices to our junior high), but, as I said, no one had a clue about high school. I have a vague recollection that before graduation we rehearsed the song, but no one knew the tune and almost no one had ever seen the words. I'm guessing thay must have handed out the verses at graduation for us, but I'm also guessing very few people kept a copy.

Alma Mater

Hail, dear old Cheltenham
      Noble and strong,
Now let us raise our
     Hearts to thee in song.
Thy name shall honored be,
     Long may it live!
Hail, Alma Mater,
Our hearts to thee we give.
Long may thy noble walls
     Echo memories dear.
Fond recollections
     Fill our hearts with cheer.
Loyal we'll ever be
     Down to every man
Our love we give thee,
     Our dear old Cheltenham.

THANKS for the memories.  Could we all Skype together and sing our Alma Mater as a class?

My long term memory is often terrific but my short-term memory is getting really poor.  I have tried all the snake -oil on the internet without success.  If anyone has a good treatment or drug please share it on this Forum.  I'm MELLLLTING!

Hail, dear old Cheltenham,

Noble and strong.

Now let us raise our

Hearts to thee in song.

Thy name shall honored be.

Long may it live.

Hail, Alma Mater,

Our hearts to thee we give.

I  found these llyrics in our Commencement Exercises program, of                                                             Thursday, June 13, 1963, which I (obviously) still have, enfolded in                                                                     my yearbook.  There is also a second verse.  Does anyone want                                                                       those lyrics?

Not sure why I can temember this and not what I had for breakfast this morning!

Does anyone else  remember this .

think it's from Elkins park junior high as a fairwell to the principal  excuse texting and I think some words are wrong :

Dr. Wessel we stand in honor

we regret that you must go

but in our hearts fond memories

of the sweet after glow

for three years we've known and loved you

And with you we will depart

But in our heart etc

You will hold a sacred part

And when tonight is through our fondest thoughts of you will never fade from our young memories

We know that you'll be sad but then again be glad because you'll always have the memories of

The class of 1960, we bid you fond fairwell

we bow our heads in tribute as we hear the old school bell
